This week I babysat for my friend Hope for 2 days while she was at work. Her son is three weeks older than Buddy. Let me just say right now I have a whole new respect for people who have twins or 2 very small children. In some ways it was good because they are on a similar schedule. But sometimes they both wanted me at the same time or needed something at the same time. When one would cry the other would fake cry to get attention too. I took them on a long walk both days with Buddy in the carrier and Braxton in the stroller. (That was a good workout!) I was trying to keep them entertained as long as possible. But it was good for Buddy to start learning how to play with other children. I think he had fun. Here are some pictures from the first day. Buddy is in a sleeper way to big for him because I thought it was going to be warm that day and dressed him in a summer outfit. But then it was cold and rainy to I grabbed one of Braxton's sleepers and put it over his clothes. Also Braxton spits up a lot. A LOT! I didn't realize how much some babies do this! Anyway that is why his bib is all dirty. I couldn't keep him in a clean one. I was exhausted after those two days. :)

Me and Buddy

Since my husband and son have the same name I knew that our son would eventually develope a nickname. Even when he was still in my belly my husband would call him his "little buddy". Now after almost 6 months I have noticed we have been calling him Buddy more and more. So on my blog I will refer to him as this from now on so everyone will know for sure who I am talking about. Buddy is my baby and Stephen is my hubby.:) Although while speaking, I still call him by his real name a lot of the time. But for writing it is less confusing. Here are some cute pictures Buddy and me!

Cover Girl Lip Liner
1 Package of Razors
Complete Contact Solution
1 Box of Ground Flax Seed
1 TubeCrest Pro-Health
3 Boxes of Trail Mix Cereal
4 Cans of Campbell Soup
2 Cans of Tomatoes
2 Cans of Black Beans
1 Can of Chili Beans
1 Can of Corn
1 Can of Green Beans
1 Jar of Skippy Peanut Butter
2 Bags of Bananas
1 Bag of Apples
1 Bag of Carrots
1 Bag of Salad
1 Stalk of Celery
1 Bag of Tortillas

Then I went to Wal-Mart and spent my $5.00 Cheerios gift card on the Flax Seed and on the Cheese. (So they were Free!)
Anyway, I am not the best person at this whole grocery shopping thing. I know people really rock at getting deals. But I hope that it encourages you that if you try and put in some effort you can really save a lot of money. A few years ago I would have spent way more on all of this stuff and I thought then that I was being frugal.

Bread Machine
My friend Jane gave me a bread machine that she never uses. I was so excited because I have wanted one for a long time.
I love it. I can't believe I had never used one before. It makes it so easy to make bread. I have made two loaves using this recipe. One I made in the machine and for the other one I used the machine to mix and knead the dough but then let it rise in the pan and baked it in the oven. (Like the recipe I mentioned tells you to do). It does make a better loaf if you can put it in the oven.
I used a whole grain wheat flour and found an organic brand at Wal-Mart that wasn't expensive. I don't eat a ton of bread but I figure if I am going to eat some bread then homemade bread tastes so much better and better for you! My friend Paula told me yesterday that sometimes before church she leaves something cooking in the crockpot and all the ingredients in the bread machine so when she comes home she has fresh bread and a nice meal. That is a good idea.

Sleeping Free
Little Stephen has loved being swaddled all his life. He is a really snuggly fellow so I think he liked feeling all wrapped up all night. But recently he has gotten stronger and so he would come out of it and then wake up and cry. I was getting tired of this but I was dreading breaking him of the habit because he can't usually can't sleep long when he is not in it. So yesterday I tried letting him take naps without it. I would lay him on his side so one of his arms was still tucked in under him and I gave him a stuff animal to hold onto. (He likes holding onto something.) He slept like this twice. So last night I took the plunge. It took him a while to fall asleep good, but then he slept all night without it for the first time! Wow that was easier than I thought! My little baby is getting bigger.

Is Motherhood Messing with your Hair?

Have you seen that Suave Commercial (the title of my blog post)? That is what I feel like at the end of the day. As you can see in this picture by the end of the day my hair is usually a mess. :) I have had it spit up in and drooled on, my hair clips pulled out of it, and wind blown from walks outside with the baby. But the newest thing is that he loves to hold onto my hair. Anytime I pick up up he goes straight for my hair. He doesn't pull it he just likes to hold onto it and feel it. But since he is teething his hands have usually been in his mouth and are all slimy. So then he grabs my hair with his slimy hands. Oh well one day years from now I might miss those slimy hands. :) But think I am going to go get my haircut soon. Now I know why a lot of women get their hair cut shorter when they have a baby!

Burch Update
Ok so it has been awhile since I have updated about our lives here in the Burch household.
I will start with Baby Stephen (He is over 5 months old now!) - He is changing by the day. He loves his "exersaucer", and being outside. He will not make a peep if he is rolling in his stroller somewhere. He likes to smile at the elderly women in the grocery store and make their day. He has started hugging! (So sweet!) If you have long hair he will immediately hold on to it when you pick him up. He likes to be on his tummy and will play like that until he flips over. He is sleeping almost 12 hours at night. He has started eating some baby food. I have been using this book as a guide:
I really like it. It is somewhat like the "Super Baby Food" book except it adds in meat and "SBF" does not. It shows you how to make your own baby food and when to add certain foods. I am making baby food and also using some jarred baby food.
So far he has eaten carrots, bananas, avocados, prunes, butter-nut squash, broccoli, and peaches. Tomorrow we try pears for the first time and his next veggie will be peas. He really likes to eat!
He is trying to hold the bottle but can't yet. He likes to lay on his back and play with his feet. He likes to hear his voice and when music is on sometimes he makes a noise that sounds like he is trying to sing:) He is really cuddly. He is also getting quite a bit of hair. I can't tell what color it is. It is kind of blondish, reddish, brownish? His eyes have stayed really blue. Ok I could go on but if you are even still reading this I don't want to over-do it! haha.
Me- I am enjoying motherhood. It has brought me a lot of joy and the transition has been easier than I thought. I am trying to just take a day at a time and enjoy each stage. I have a neighbor and a former co-worker that I have been trying to hang out with and share my faith. I am singing at church from time to time and helping with the nursery ministry. I am helping with administrative things for my husband's business and trying to support him however I can with the preparations for the church plant. I enjoy spending time with friends here in Greenville. I know when we move I will miss having so many good friends (and my family) living near by. My parents are great babysitters!:) I have been reading two devotion books right now, "Surrender" by Nancy Leigh DeMoss, and "Living Water" by Chinese believer "Brother Yun." Both are good and convicting. I also have been reading some fiction. I love to read but I go through spells when I don't read much at all and then all the sudden I want to read all the time. And believe it or not I had another Baby Shower last Sunday. My church gave me a shower because they didn't have time before Stephen was born. I told them it was ok but they insisted. But it was a blessing getting some books and things for an older baby. I am trying to stay on my exercise schedule. The baby weight is coming off a little at a time. I have about 6 pounds to pre-pregnancy wieght but I want to loose a little more than that.
My Husband - Right now he is in the "ministry development" stage for the Asheville church plant. He is networking, gathering a team of supporters, prayers, helpers, etc. We have finally gotten over the 50% mark on support raising which is a blessing. He is working hard on this and running his business. He is still teaching at the Rescue Mission every Tuesday night and he loves that. He is speaking at Mars Hill College (near Asheville) again in a few weeks. He is loving being a daddy.
That's us in a nutshell! We will continue to keep you updated.

25 Pounds of Rice
Recently someone gave us a 25 pound bag of rice. Why? I am not really sure. The bearer of this gift was single guy who goes to our church. I guess he was at SAMS or some place like that and thought "Wow look at this huge bag! This is a good deal." Then he got home and thought, "I don't need this much rice." or "I don't have room for it". Who knows? Anyway he asked my husband if we would want it and then two weeks ago we became the proud owner an enormous amount of rice.
So I have been trying to think of ways to use it. One way is making rice milk. I know a lot of people who buy this for their kids because they have dairy allergies but I have never actually bought it.
But my husband is slightly allergic to milk. It sometimes makes his sinuses flare up and gives him a headache. But since I have been making smoothies for myself almost every morning he felt left out:) I bought Soy Milk a couple of times. But after we had all this rice I thought, "I am sure there is a recipe for rice milk on the Internet. It's probably not that hard to make."
So I found a couple of recipes and have made it twice. The first time it was a little thick. The second time a little thin. So although it wasn't drinkable by itself it was good enough for a smoothie when all the other ingredients are blended in. But I am going to keep working on it to see if I can make it better!
We also have had rice with beans and stir-fry this week. So what else is good with rice?:)

More Americans say they have no religion
Study finds percentage of Christians in the nation has declined
A wide-ranging study on American religious life found that the Roman Catholic population has been shifting out of the Northeast to the Southwest, the percentage of Christians in the nation has declined and more people say they have no religion at all.
Fifteen percent of respondents said they had no religion, an increase from 14.2 percent in 2001 and 8.2 percent in 1990, according to the American Religious Identification Survey.
Northern New England surpassed the Pacific Northwest as the least religious region, with Vermont reporting the highest share of those claiming no religion, at 34 percent. Still, the study found that the numbers of Americans with no religion rose in every state.
"No other religious bloc has kept such a pace in every state," the study's authors said.
Catholics on the decline in NortheastIn the Northeast, self-identified Catholics made up 36 percent of adults last year, down from 43 percent in 1990. At the same time, however, Catholics grew to about one-third of the adult population in California and Texas, and one-quarter of Floridians, largely due to Latino immigration, according to the research.
Nationally, Catholics remain the largest religious group, with 57 million people saying they belong to the church. The tradition gained 11 million followers since 1990, but its share of the population fell by about a percentage point to 25 percent.
Christians who aren't Catholic also are a declining segment of the country.
In 2008, Christians comprised 76 percent of U.S. adults, compared to about 77 percent in 2001 and about 86 percent in 1990. Researchers said the dwindling ranks of mainline Protestants, including Methodists, Lutherans and Episcopalians, largely explains the shift. Over the last seven years, mainline Protestants dropped from just over 17 percent to 12.9 percent of the population.
The report from The Program on Public Values at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., surveyed 54,461 adults in English or Spanish from February through November of last year. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 0.5 percentage points. The findings are part of a series of studies on American religion by the program that will later look more closely at reasons behind the trends.
Organized religion playing less of a roleThe current survey, being released Monday, found traditional organized religion playing less of a role in many lives. Thirty percent of married couples did not have a religious wedding ceremony and 27 percent of respondents said they did not want a religious funeral.
About 12 percent of Americans believe in a higher power but not the personal God at the core of monotheistic faiths. And, since 1990, a slightly greater share of respondents — 1.2 percent — said they were part of new religious movements, including Scientology, Wicca and Santeria.
The study also found signs of a growing influence of churches that either don't belong to a denomination or play down their membership in a religious group.
Respondents who called themselves "non-denominational Christian" grew from 0.1 percent in 1990 to 3.5 percent last year. Congregations that most often use the term are megachurches considered "seeker sensitive." They use rock style music and less structured prayer to attract people who don't usually attend church. Researchers also found a small increase in those who prefer being called evangelical or born-again, rather than claim membership in a denomination.
Evangelical or born-again Americans make up 34 percent of all American adults and 45 percent of all Christians and Catholics, the study found. Researchers found that 18 percent of Catholics consider themselves born-again or evangelical, and nearly 39 percent of mainline Protestants prefer those labels. Many mainline Protestant groups are riven by conflict over how they should interpret what the Bible says about gay relationships, salvation and other issues.
Pentecostals stay steadyThe percentage of Pentecostals remained mostly steady since 1990 at 3.5 percent, a surprising finding considering the dramatic spread of the tradition worldwide. Pentecostals are known for a spirited form of Christianity that includes speaking in tongues and a belief in modern-day miracles.
Mormon numbers also held steady over the period at 1.4 percent of the population, while the number of Jews who described themselves as religiously observant continued to drop, from 1.8 percent in 1990 to 1.2 percent, or 2.7 million people, last year. Researchers plan a broader survey on people who consider themselves culturally Jewish but aren't religious.
The study found that the percentage of Americans who identified themselves as Muslim grew to 0.6 percent of the population, while growth in Eastern religions such as Buddhism slightly slowed.

$5.00 and $3.00 Huggies Coupon
I try to check the coupons each week from the email I get from www.couponbug.com. This week they had two huge Huggie Coupons. One was for $5.00 off and one was for $3.00 off. I got a pack of Huggies today at Wal-Mart for $5.00. I am sure you could even get them cheaper if somewhere had them on sale. I just thought I would pass along the tip.
Oh and this is a shout out to Kelley S. I ran into her at Barnes and Noble tonight and she told me she reads my blog everyday! I had no idea. I really don't think sometimes that people are actually reading my blog. I guess I need to update more!:) In Greenville it is supposed to be very pretty tomorrow. If you live in the area I hope you are able to enjoy it. Happy Weekend!

Snow!

This will probably be the only time Stephen will wear this snow suit:) But he sure did have fun it it. His dad walked around with him outside in the snow and when he came back in he had the biggest smile on his face. This was the end to a good weekend. We had a friend over for dinner Friday night. Then Saturday we went to Asheville for dinner with some friends there. Then Sunday we had church and snow! Also Friday I got a new coffee table. My mom surprised me with it. It is awesome because you can store (hide) things inside of it like books and baby toys. Plus it is soft so Stephen won't crack his head when he starts pulling up. But I have my old table still. Does anyone need a coffee table?

I Can See the Future...
...and I am not sure I am ready yet!
Baby Stephen has recently gotten much more active. When he is in the exersaucer he is all over the place stopping his feet and rocking back and forth. Now he is also really moving around a lot when I put him on his tummy for "tummy time". I made this little video of him yesterday. This is now what he does when he is on his stomach and it reminds me that it will not be very long before my little baby is mobile. Each new stage will be exciting. But it also will begin a whole new season of chasing after him and having to watch him more to make sure he is not getting into anything. So I am going to enjoy these last few weeks of him (sort of) staying put.
